Is Boat Tour to Pyramiden worth it?

Worth it for Arctic history seekers, not budget travellers

Pyramiden itself charges nothing — entrance is 0 NOK — so the boat tour to pyramiden is what you're actually buying: the crossing of Billefjorden, a licensed guide, and the polar-bear protection that makes walking a Soviet ghost town legal at all. What you get is a genuinely rare thing: a Lenin bust at 78°N, the world's northernmost grand piano, abandoned Soviet mining blocks, and Nordenskiöld Glacier calving on the return leg. The Pyramiden Ghost Town & Nordenskiöld Glacier Boat Expedition bundles both; the RIB expeditions trade comfort for speed and spray. It pays off if you want Svalbard landmarks with substance rather than scenery alone. If you only want ice and wildlife, a fjord safari delivers more per krone. Booking boat tour to pyramiden tickets in advance matters — summer sailings from Longyearbyen fill early.

What makes it worth it

  • Free site entry; you pay only for access
  • Licensed guide handles polar bear safety
  • Soviet ghost town plus glacier in one sailing
  • Nordenskiöld Glacier calving views from the water
  • No road access — boat is the realistic route

Keep in mind

  • Ashore time is short relative to sailing hours
  • Open-water crossing gets cold, rough and wet
  • Small settlement crowds when two vessels dock
  • Weather cancellations are common, even midsummer

Bottom line: Book the boat tour to pyramiden tour if the Soviet ruins are the draw; skip it for a wildlife-focused fjord run if they aren't.

What visiting Boat Tour to Pyramiden is really like

You board at the Longyearbyen quay and feel the temperature drop the moment the vessel clears the harbour wall. For the first hour you stay outside, watching Adventfjorden open into Isfjorden, then Billefjorden narrowing ahead. Crew hand out insulated suits.

Read more Show less

You layer up, because the wind off the ice runs colder than the forecast suggests.

Most boat tour to pyramiden sailings pause at the Nordenskiöld Glacier face before the landing. The engines cut. You hear the ice work — a low crack, then silence, then a slab dropping into the water. Photograph it from the bow rail, then go inside and warm your hands before the town.

At the quay a guide with a rifle counts you off the gangway and sets the walking order. You keep to the group. You cross the tundra strip to the central square, stand under Lenin's bust, and follow the guide into the Cultural Palace, where the piano sits in a cold hall and your breath shows. You look up at the London and Paris blocks, curtains still hanging in some windows. Entry to the town costs nothing; the crossing is the ticket. Aim to be moving through the settlement between 08:30 and 18:00, when the light holds and guided arrivals are scheduled. Then you walk back down to the water and watch the pyramid mountain shrink astern.

All the details about your upcoming adventure in one place

Pyramiden once held roughly 1,000 Soviet citizens, a heated swimming pool, a greenhouse growing tomatoes, and the world's northernmost grand piano. The mining settlement, named for the pyramid-shaped mountain above it, was sold by Sweden to the Soviet Union in 1927 and abandoned by Trust Arktikugol in 1998.

Residents left in stages, taking little; the town was closed rather than dismantled.

What remains is unusual among Arctic sites. Permafrost and dry polar air slow decay, so the settlement has weathered rather than collapsed. Lenin's bust still faces the fjord from the central square, the northernmost statue of him anywhere. Behind it stands the Cultural Palace, its parquet floors, cinema seats and mosaic murals largely intact. The apartment blocks carry nicknames the miners gave them — London, Paris, the Crazy House. Coal from the mountainside was hauled by cable to the quay, and the rusted pylons still cross the slope in a straight line above the tundra.

Access explains much of the site's condition. There is no road; a boat tour to pyramiden remains the practical route, running across Billefjorden from Longyearbyen past Nordenskiöld Glacier, whose calving front closes the head of the fjord in a wall of blue-white ice. Polar bear presence means unguided wandering is prohibited, and a rifle-carrying guide accompanies every group. Entrance to the town itself costs 0 NOK — free entry — with the cost sitting entirely in the crossing, which is why Pyramiden boat trips form the whole of the visitor economy here.

The fjord passage is not incidental scenery. Vessels track the coast beneath bird cliffs where kittiwakes and little auks nest in tens of thousands, and beluga pods are recorded in the shallows near the glacier outflow. Walruses haul out on gravel spits along the route. Guides on the better boat tour to pyramiden tours read the settlement as architecture rather than curiosity: a planned Arctic town built to demonstrate that Soviet civic life could be transplanted to 78 degrees north, complete with sports hall, canteen and hospital. Since 2007 a small hotel, the Tulpan, has operated seasonally, and a caretaker staff overwinters. Svalbard's cultural heritage law protects all structures predating 1946 automatically, and Arktikugol has since stabilised several later buildings. The settlement is now managed as heritage rather than ruin — a distinction visible in every propped roofline and boarded window.

Permafrost and dry polar air slow decay, so the settlement has weathered rather than collapsed.

The story

The Industrial and Cultural Legacy Behind Your Boat Tour to Pyramiden

Pyramiden began as a Swedish venture. In 1910, the geologist Bertil Högbom registered coal claims beneath the pyramid-shaped mountain that gave the settlement its name. Swedish operations faltered. In 1927, the Soviet state trust Arktikugol purchased the field from Svenska Stenkolsaktiebolaget Spetsbergen and began the slow work of turning a claim into a town. Progress was interrupted in 1941, when Allied forces evacuated Svalbard and much of the infrastructure was destroyed to deny it to German use. Reconstruction after 1946 was deliberate and ideological: Pyramiden was to be a model Soviet settlement at 78 degrees north. The architecture records that ambition. Soil was shipped from Ukraine to green the central square. The Cultural Palace, completed in 1955, held a library, a cinema and a grand piano still standing inside. A heated indoor swimming pool opened in 1971. Residential blocks acquired nicknames — London for the bachelors, Paris for the women, the Crazy House for families. At its peak in the late 1980s the town held roughly 1,000 residents, sustained entirely by the mine cut into the mountainside above. A boat tour to Pyramiden approaches this ensemble from Billefjorden, with the Nordenskiöld glacier calving nearby. Decline came quickly. Coal seams grew unprofitable, the Soviet Union dissolved, and the Vnukovo Airlines crash near Longyearbyen in August 1996 killed 141 people, most of them Arktikugol employees and their families. Arktikugol announced closure in 1998. The last coal was extracted on 31 March 1998, and the final residents departed on 10 October 1998. The permafrost then did what no curator could: it froze the town in place. Since 2007 Arktikugol has maintained a small caretaker presence, and the hotel Tulipan reopened in 2013. Buildings constructed before 1946 are protected as cultural heritage under Norwegian law. What survives is a rare industrial landscape — mining headframes, Lenin's bust facing the fjord, ventilation ducts running down the scree. Any Pyramiden ghost town tour is, in effect, an archaeology of the twentieth century. Free entry applies to the settlement itself; access depends on booked boat tour to Pyramiden tickets, and the operators listed above supply the only current pricing for each boat tour to Pyramiden tour and for the longer Billefjorden boat tour to Pyramiden tours.
